Russell and his dog Capers

Staff Spotlight: Russell Patterson

A Conversation with Russell Patterson . . .

It’s time for everyone to get to know our fearless leader, Russell. He agreed to sit down with me and talk a little bit about how he got to where he is today.

1. What is your official position with the law firm?

I would say my title is owner and number one attorney.

2. How long have you lived on Hilton Head Island?

I moved to the Island in 1984 and have lived here for the last thirty five years.

3. How have you seen the Island change over the years?

The Island has matured over the past thirty plus years, but it still has a great volunteer spirit. Also, it still provides a great quality of life for me and my family.

4. How did you end up with your own practice?

I started with a big firm in Beaufort, SC right out of law school. A few years later, I moved to the Island to join a mid-size law firm. After about twenty years, I decided it was time to fulfill my dream of opening my own practice to provide more dedicated attention to my clients. I have really enjoyed having my own practice for the last few years.

5. What kinds of legal issues do you regularly handle?

I handle a lot of business litigation, foreclosures, tax sales, and Home Owners Association disputes. Also, I work on a large number of commercial and residential real estate closings each year.

6. What is the best aspect of owning your own practice?

I think the best part of owning my own business is the flexibility. It provides me with greater control of my work life balance so I can spend more time with my wife and family. Of course, I also love the location of our office and being able to watch people fishing every day.

7. How have you been involved in the community during your time on the Island?

Initially, I was involved in the Island JCs. From there I became involved with the Island Rec Center, People for Parks, Hilton Head Leadership, and the Loggerhead Turtle Program. When my daughters were in school I was the President of the Hilton Head Christian Academy’s Booster Club. Most recently, I have been rescuing and disposing of abandoned boats in Broad Creek.

8. What do you do for fun?

I really enjoy fishing, boating, and cheering on the Clemson Tigers with my lovely wife of 32 years and my family. This year my goal has been to get back to regularly playing tennis.
